Should Men Always Pay??

I was on the tube heading into London on Monday and couldn’t help overhearing (ok I was bored and eavesdropping) a conversation between two guys sitting to the right of me. The conversation went a little like this…

Guy 1: “You know when Jacky and I go out, I always pay. I’m not saying it really bothers me or anything but I literally have to pay for every meal.”

Guy 2: “I don’t always pay. Sometimes I pay. Sometimes she pays. Sometimes we split it.”

Guy 1: ”Yes, well that seems fair. We went to a wedding last week and I ran out of cash. Instead of offering to help, she instructed me to the nearest cash point.”

Guy 2: “Ouch.”

Guy 1: “Not that it bothers me or anything – I know she makes less money than I do but it would be nice if just once she would offer to pay.”

The conversation pretty much continued this way from Clapham Junction to London Waterloo.

A couple of things struck me about this conversation. Firstly Guy 1 kept saying it didn’t bother him that his partner never pays but OH HOW IT BOTHERS HIM! Secondly, I wonder if his partner has any idea how he feels about paying for everything – would he have the nerve to confront her?

Most importantly, though, I wonder if my own partner is sitting on a train somewhere discussing ME with his mate, issues that he is too afraid to address with me directly??

I am not the type of woman who never pays. I always pay…probably too often. But I have to admit, I have friends who think they should never pay.

So, what is the answer? Should men always pay?
